Total War: Warhammer is an investment. That’s what Creative Assembly and SEGA want you to think. The game, released this Summer, has already accumulated enough DLC that to purchase them all you’d need to pay almost as much as the base game (£27.96 vs £39.99). To be honest, it wouldn’t feel right if a game sponsored by Games Workshop - famous for re-doing old ground - didn’t come with a host of upgrades, do-overs and cosmetics.

Total War: WARHAMMER – The Grim & The Grave is the first Lords Pack for the original game that makes both The Empire and The Vampire Counts stronger than ever. The Pack includes:. Two new Legendary Lords and two additional Lord types. New quests, items,. Grim/grave allows you to have sigmarite themed forces, and playing as such really can be fun, since you can churn out flaggelants, which are berserk suicide troops, and unbreakable, which gives you a significant reply to VC during the early campaign. But your campaigns are otherwise quite vanilla, compared with the kind and warlord additions.

Despite that, The Grim and the Grave has arrived with a fairly robust set of extras for Warhammer fans. The pack bolsters the rosters of both the Empire and the Vampire Counts, hoping to flesh out the factions a little more in anticipation of the next large expansion release (slated to occur in 2017). It includes legendary lords Volkmar the Grim for the Empire and Helman Ghorst for the Vampire Counts. Along with these iconic heroes comes a collection of unique “units of renown” that can be recruited by each factions. These units have locked stats and won't upgrade with experience but offer a quick way of getting elite battalions in the early game.

To give you an exhaustive list, the new units on offer are the corpse cart, mortis engine, flagellants and free company militia. Regiments of renown appear for militia, cannons, flagellants, swordsmen, handgunners, rockets, the luminark, reiksguard and the demigryphs for the Empire and for crypt ghouls, vargheists, dire wolves, grave guard, zombies, hexwraiths and black knights for the Vampire Counts.

There are also a new set of quest battles for each legendary lord and a couple of new agents to utilise on the campaign map. The DLC essentially allows players to unlock a higher level of gameplay earlier in the campaign, and can really help make a difference in those first few turns. The units themselves - and their larger-than-life agent counterparts - while powerful, won’t win battles for themselves and do much to add to the colour and pageantry of the battlefield. If a complaint can be found it’s that these units weren’t included in the original release, especially considering that they’re not much more than reskins of existing models.

Creative Assembly is still churning through a robust schedule of DLC and Free-LC, with a similar expansion to the Dwarfs and the Orcs expected to arrive in the next few weeks. At £6 The Grim and the Grave is as worth it as you deem it. Completionists won’t be disappointed by spending their cash but those who want to shy away from the price can rest assured knowing they’re not missing out on essential game content. Isn’t this really how DLC should be done?

Total War: Warhammer - The Grim And The Grave

Volkmar requires The Grim and the Grave Lord Pack DLC.

Description[edit | edit source]

Volkmar the Grim is the head of the Cult of Sigmar and the most powerful religious leader in the Empire. He is a pious and foreboding man who is utterly devoted to the destruction of Chaosin allits forms. When the Grand Theogonist accompanies an army into battle, he typically rides atop the resplendent War Altar of Sigmar, inspiring the soldiers around him to great acts of heroism as he strikes the followers of Chaos down with powerful blows and words of divine force. Volkmar is a holy terror on the battlefield, a man who fights with the fury of Sigmar himself. It is said that Volkmar's soul was forged of steel and he fights the malign influence of Chaos with every fibre of his being.

  5. Benediction: The Warrior Priest passes the blessings of the Heldenhammer to the brave men around him.
  6. Faith's Bastion: A quick invocation of protection to Sigmar or Ulric will bless the implorer with a shield of godly faith, should they prove worthy.

Strategy[edit | edit source]

Volkmar is a powerful lord who cannot be underestimated. He has regeneration, something no other Empire Lord has outside of support from the Lore of Life (and Boris). Volkmar on a chariot provides a terror causing mobile unit that can charge into infantry and then use his battle prayers to bombard the enemies around him or buff allies. His bonuses to Flagellants in campaign are nothing to scoff at either. 12% Physical resistance and 14 melee defence does worlds to improving their survivability in battle. On top of that, he has +30% casualty replenishment rate for them only. The incentives to give Volkmar a massive amount of Flagellants are huge. Given that he has an unbreakable front line, all Volkmar needs is devastating ranged units/artillery pieces, and a few cavalry units to harry the enemy backline.
